Hair C0lor can be all too confusing! But with this advise, it can be less daunting.
1. Semi permanent color is made with a direct dye, no mixing with a developer. Straight out of the bottle into the bowl/bottle and onto your hair. What's in the bottle is what you get plus the color that your hair already is. This type of color does not lighten your hair. Basically it is a coating or layer of color on your hair shaft and it wears off your hair with each shampoo. So shampooing everyday causes the direct dye molecules to detach more readily from your hair. I recommend that you use Start Fresh to lenghthen the time in between shampoos.
2. Demi-permanent hair color secures its' molecules in the shaft of the hair for a longer time than semi-permanent, because it is always mixed with a developer. There can be a slight lift of your natural hair color, because of the oxidation form the low levels of Peroxide used. But, if you already have a previous color less than 2 months old there may very little reaction of your natural color to this type of coloring. This color lives longer in your hair than semi, but there can be a definite change in the color of your hair as it grows out and as the color wears out of the hair shaft.
3. Permanent hair color is the most oxidative or reactive color on your hair. It can lighten alot because of the varying volumes of peroxide (10 vol. -40vol). The higher the volume the more natural pigment is lifted out of your hair. This type of color has the most color range neede to cover all hair coloring desires, except the palest blonde, which requires bleaching of the natural pigment and the shaft itself. The color should last the longest, but has the capability of helping the hairshaft and ends to dry out. Therefore good haircare practice is very important. Conditioning the way I have previously described will help preserve your hairs ends. OK, let's review again... condition from midshaft of your hair throught the ends. Rinse only 10 seconds. Your towel, hairdryer, tools, and hands all pull moisture from your hair. There you have the different types of hair color.
Next time I'll reveiw what's the important ingredients in hair color, so you can make better stylist/hair colorist choices.
